Reader’s Annotation: Theodora connects with her Christian faith to face adversities large and small.

Summary: Theodora Llewellyn is approaching thirty years old when she catches the chicken pox; quarantined at home alone for two weeks, she decides to use the opportunity to start a journaling project to track her spiritual growth.  What follows is a fourteen month account in the life of the evangelical office worker through the struggles of life.  Theo throws herself into projects like this, hoping to watch herself change into a better person.  As her friends and family remind her, change doesn't come so quickly.

Events in Theo's life keep piling up, raising her self-doubt.  Her church's inaugural Prayer Partner Program matches her with Charity, a generally content mother of eight that Theo knew in school and could not stand, even then.  She sets increasingly high expectations on her "spiritually degenerate" boyfriend of ten years, Kevin. One of her siblings is getting married, while the other is having her first child.  When the community of Sidcup loses an elderly member of the community and exemplar of the faith, Theo steps up to commemorate her life and extol the congregation to follow that excellent example.

Reader’s Annotation: Mysterious figure sends haunted relics attached to depraved asylum to small-town residents.

Summary: The Blackstone Asylum sits on a hill overseeing the town that shares its name.  After housing the mentally unwell for many years, the asylum was abandoned after the death of Malcolm Metcalf, its last supervisor.  Many families in town once worked for the asylum or knew people committed "for their own good".  Now, the time has come for the asylum to be torn down, with a new commercial center waiting to be built and bring jobs and income back to the small town.  But someone--something--is unwilling to let the asylum go quietly.

Across six volumes, families across Blackstone encounter mysterious gifts: a blond-haired doll, a heart-shaped locket, a lighter in the shape of a dragon, a handkerchief with an embroidered letter 'R', a stereoscope and an old-fashioned razor blade.  Each item carries a grudge with it; the mental and physical torments experienced by the asylum patients are passed down to different families. The anguish and deaths suffered by the residents of Blackstone move the son of the last supervisor, Oliver Metcalf, to investigate who is responsible for the gifts, and why they are seeking to stop the new construction.  When sweet Rebecca Morrison gets abducted after fleeing the fire in her aunt's home, Oliver must face the final truth waiting for him inside the asylum to bring her out.

Reader’s Annotation: Former foster child in San Francisco reconciles her circumstances with the home she almost had.

Summary: Virginia Jones has been in the California foster care system for all of her life-- shuffled from home to home, she had no chances to make connections or settle on life goals.  All that she has is a love of gardening and comprehensive knowledge of Victorian flower language, the symbolic meaning attached to plants.  At eighteen years old, Victoria is free from the system, but her initial inability to find a job or pay rent leads her to become homeless.  However, her luck turns around upon finding a floral shop; after a stint of temp jobs for the proprietor, Renata, Virginia proves that she has what it takes to be a self-made florist (as much as to herself as to Renata).

The story intercuts Virginia's present trials and tribulations with flashbacks to the one place in her childhood that Virginia called home: a vineyard operated by a woman named Elizabeth. Elizabeth had wanted a younger child to look after, but found a kindred spirit in the wild, distrustful nine-year-old Virginia.  Virginia found herself thriving in Elizabeth's care, but after adoption proceedings went awry, she takes it upon herself to spare Elizabeth the pain of caring for such a troublesome child.  But when Virginia encounters Elizabeth's nephew Grant in a flower market, she begins to consider whether it is worth returning to a place she ran away from for her foster mother's sake.

Reader’s Annotation: Author pairs up with detective to solve murder of a high profile divorce attorney.

Summary: On the set of an adaptation of his novel, Anthony Horowitz gets contacted by Daniel Hawthorne, a detective he collaborated with for a true-crime memoir.  A murder has been committed that Hawthorne believes would make an interesting tale: Richard Pryce, a divorce lawyer for the rich-and-famous, has been bludgeoned and slashed to death in his home with a bottle of expensive wine.  The only other clue left at the scene is a message painted a wall: 182.  While he has his misgivings about working with Hawthorne again, Horowitz takes the detective up on his offer.

Horowitz and Hawthorne travel around London, steps ahead of the antagonistic inspector detective Cara Grunshaw, interviewing the main suspects including Pryce's husband, his last client, and a Japanese author known for her stance against patriarchal systems and a collection of haiku.  When a second man connected with the lawyer dies in a "person-under-train" incident, the pair must seek out additional accounts and consider the connections between these two men and a caving accident that occurred years before.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Reader’s Annotation: Two sorcerers spur their pupils into a magical duel within the bounds of a circus.

Summary: The circus arrives with no warning, black and white tents rising into the sky.  Filled with a multitude of attractions, it is impossible to explore in a single night.  It only opens at dusk and closes at dawn, and after a week or two, it goes to another location.  The Night Circus, Morgenstern's debut novel, explores themes of rivalry and love within this mystical realm.  Two master magicians initiate a duel between their proteges, to display their prowess and assert the dominance of their brand of magic.  The arena they devise will be public, testing the young people's daring and discretion: a circus of wonders.

Celia Bowen and Marco Alisdair have trained their entire lives to become strong enough to engage in the Competition--Celia through her father, Marco from a benefactor with no name.  At first, their goal is simple: add to the circus, creating fantastic decorations and exhibits, and fill the patrons with unbridled wonder.  But in using the circus as their arena, Celia and Marco inadvertently cast a spell over the show's producers and entertainers: no-one ages or dies, and the last children of the circus were born on Opening Night, as the spell was set in place.  Delight in this circumstance turns to despair, especially as Celia and Marco learn that the only way to end the Competition and break the spell is for one of the two to die.

Summary: On March 3, 1952, a meteorite lands off of the coast of Maryland, wiping out Washington D.C. instantly. The East Coast of the United States and other coastal areas around the world flood, causing massive loss of life and rendering the survivors homeless.  Mathematician and pilot Elma York and her husband, rocket scientist Nathaniel, were among those who witnessed the strike, five hundred miles away in Pennsylvania.  As the country struggles to support the refugees from the East Coast, the Yorks come to understand a terrible truth--the Meteor's perils were not just from the immediate Impact.  Because the Meteor landed in and superheated Chesapeake Bay, water vapor in the atmosphere would continue to collect, bringing an age of global warming that would eventually boil the oceans.

There is only one solution, as the Yorks see it-- accelerate the space program and leave the Earth for colonies elsewhere.  With the government's backing and worldwide co-operation, the International Aerospace Coalition is created. Elma works as a computer, but dreams of going into space as an astronaut.  She faces fierce objection from people such as Stetson Parker, a fellow pilot from World War II with a grudge against her, as well as those unconvinced about a woman's fitness to join the space corps.  But with her loving husband's support, and the encouragement of her friends, Elma sets out to become a Lady Astronaut.

Reader’s Annotation: Nanny haunted by smart house in the Scottish Highlands.

Summary: Rowan Caine was not in the best headspace when she first sees the Heatherbrae ad.  As she relates to the reader, she'd been passed over for promotion at the nursery where she works, and she'd been sad and alone in her apartment since her roommate left the country.  So when a live-in job as a nanny for four children between two and fourteen years old with a cushy salary appeared online, it didn't take much for her to apply. But when she passed the interview and got the position, the trouble began.

Designed as a "smart" house, Heatherbrae is controlled by digital application.  Rowan finds herself struggling with the arcane control schemes and the threat of constant surveillance.  The children are more used to the technology, but after cycling through four nannies in two years, they bear little goodwill towards Rowan's efforts to integrate into their lives. The isolation of the remote estate, paired with the malfunctioning and vaguely threatening technology, wears on Rowan mentally.  Now accused of the murder of one of the children, Rowan struggles to make sense of the circumstances before her time runs out.

World War Z is told through vignettes from around the world, from the initial discovery of the infected, the Great Panic that followed and the final stand against the horde.

The stories of the survivors are presented in interview format, each person with their own story.  An American soldier documenting the disaster of the first major assault, and the triumph of the last.  A teenage girl with the mind of a preschooler relating her escape from a church full of monsters.  A Russian soldier describing the brutal methods her government used to quell dissent in the ranks. From the International Space Station's mission to preserve the world's communication satellite array, to the deepsea divers clearing the undead from ocean rigs, the interviews demonstrate the drive to survive and the hope for the future that fueled humanity's resurgence.
